Our whole family is running in a Turkey Trot this weekend, so I thought it would be fun to wear turkey hats. I figured we can also wear them next week during our monthly visit to the retirement home.

Awhile back, my friend sent me the link to this blog post. I knew this was something I wanted to try, so I found this shirt at Goodwill for about a buck. I wasn't too concerned about what shirt I found, I knew the first one would mostly be for "practice".

I changed a few things, like adding elastic in the sleeves, and where I placed the ribbon. This is how it turned out:

I have been so busy sewing lately, I actually have a backlog of things to post here!
I love this outfit! The fabric has little dragonflys on it. A couple years ago I cut out a dress pattern with this fabric, but never made the dress, so I was happy the pieces were big enough to make the shirt and ruffles.

There was so much gathering on this dress, it makes wonder if the Victorian dressmakers had special tricks for gathering fabric! I swear sometimes I was sewing through an inch of gathered fabric.

I thought this flannel fabric would make a cute skirt to match a couple of my sweaters. I totally forgot about matching plaid until I had almost all the pieces cut out. Doh! Nothing I could do about then, except make a plaid skirt with mismatching lines. It has a really cute ruffle in the back.

While making this dress, there were so many moments I wanted to just throw in the towel and go buy her one. The fabrics were difficult to work with, and things just kept! going! wrong!. But, in the end, the dress looked lovely. The pictures really don't capture how sparkly the bottom is.

A lady from the assisted living facility that we visit every month ordered this for a young relative of hers. She liked Sadie's Valentine dress I made so much, she wanted me to make a dress with that pattern, she provided the fabric. The flower is something extra I added, it pins on just in case she doesn't want it. I think the dress turned out cute, I hope she likes it. I also have to thank Sew Blessed for the fabric flower tutorial.

Every month we visit an assisted living home to sing songs and visit the folks there. During our last visit one of the ladies showed me a hat-scarf that a relative had brought back from Finland. She wondered if I could make her some more like it. This was my "test run". I made this with some of my own scraps before I cut into her fabric. I need to size it just a bit bigger, but otherwise it came out pretty good.

I finally got around to making a new bag. I have been wanting to for a while since I don't need to fit diapers and wipes in my bag anymore. I added lots of pockets to this one. On one side is a zippered pocket, on the other is a velcro pocket. Inside is a pocket for Sam's epi pen as well as one for the checkbook. The fabric is durable canvas.

I am so glad to have this dress finished. It has been cut out for months. It turned out okay, but in hindsight there are a lot of things I would of did different. I would of added piping in the front seam and collar seams, I would of used heavier interfacing in the collar, and I would of looked online for a smaller frog closure (JoAnne only had one size and color). Also, this fabric, while very pretty, snags something awful! Thank goodness it was 50% off its already clearance price. Live and learn right?

I was recently given a couple of really cute sleeveless dresses. I'm a bit too modest to wear sleeveless, so I decided a shrug is what I needed. I found a couple tutorials online on how to turn a t-shirt into a shrug and decided to go for it.

First I found a $4 tee at Meijer, one that I love because I am a puffed sleeves kind of girl.

Then I measured and cut at the desired length.

Another cut right up the center.

A little bit of rounding the edges for shape.

Then a quick serge around the raw edges.

Mr. Brooke's Coat

Another costume for the Little Women play. This will be a coat for Mr. Brooke. I also have to add that the previous cloak was actually for Aunt March, not Marmee. This was a collaborative effort, as I only sewed it together, someone had already cut everything out for me. Also keep in mind that this coat is for a teenage boy, and my dressform is sized for a woman, so it doesn't look quite like it will on him.

Sam got his own library card this week, so of course he wanted his library bag! Learning from experience, I made this one much wider (they check out so many books at a time!). I have to say these bags have worked great. They never lose their books, and their library cards stay safely velcroed in the pocket, only to come out when the are checking out books.

Although, I guess that's better than too small. The hemline looks wonky in this picture due to the way the fabric is laying, but it's really straight.

Sadie's Valentine Dress

This year Sadie's Valentines dress is a little more subtle. I kept second guessing the gray fabric, but the pink and red stripes just say "Valentine's Day" to me. I really love how this dress turned out. It was the first time I did pleating on a skirt instead of gathering and I think it gives it a nice old fashioned look. The sleeves are 3/4 length. The red ribbon is actually ribbon I saved from a bath set that my sister gave me a couple years ago. It was so pretty I knew I would find use for it someday.

I've been wanting to experiment with crinoline for awhile, so I thought this would be a good time to use it. (I just realized it's really hard to see in the pic...the crinoline is stiff netting that makes the dress puff out)

I love this dress! When I was making it, I kept wondering if the prints were maybe a bit too much, but as soon as I put it on her I realized it's perfect! I'm going to try a variation of this pattern with smocking instead of shirring.

The photographer who took our family pictures happens to be pregnant and wanted one of these nursing covers. She deducted the cost of this from the price of some pictures we ordered. Also, she picked out the fabric so I didn't have to worry about finding the right fabric (which can often be the trickiest part of a job). A win-win for everybody!

I have a friend who always thinks of me when she wants something that she thinks I might be able to do. I love it, because I end up figuring out how to make things I would of never thought of.

I made this naproll for her son, who spends a few hours in daycare during the week. The "cushion" is quilted cotton, with a fleece blanket and pillow attached. I used circles to quilt it (thanks to my embroidery machine). It folds up, and the handles snap together.

I have a couple more to make for her.

This is one of the dresses I made with the money her grandpa sent for making her a dress. I used the same pattern as the dress he thought was so cute. I actually made this a few months ago, but never posted it. You know I'm having a hard time keeping up my blogging when I forgot to post stuff on this blog. I love to post on this blog. I have the second all cut out, it just needs to be sewn together.

The red apron has tiny white polka dots that don't show up very well in the picture. I forgot to straighten it before the picture, the hem isn't really crooked like that.

I need some winter weight skirts so I picked up this gray tweed looking fabric (It's actually lightweight flannel ). I decided to make my own pattern so it would fit me exactly how I wanted. The fabric has a real "business suit" look to it, and I wanted to make sure it didn't look like a suit. I wanted it to be fitted though the hips, then flare out. The skirt turned out exactly how I wanted.

I was actually starting to walk away here when Elijah finally took the picture, but I think this picture catches the shape of the skirt best.

I wanted to make a little "going back to school" gift for my cousin who is starting her doctorate (!) program this Fall. She studies math, hence the math fabric. I wish the math problems on the fabric were a little more difficult, but it's not like there is a big selection of math fabric to choose from. I thought the pink would add a nice little touch, an idea I got from looking at bags online.

She mentioned that a place to put a water bottle would be nice and I remembered a bag I had a long time ago with a side pocket for a water bottle and copied that.

I wasn't too crazy about using white (but again, all scraps). I added the pink swirl to add a little more color to the white, but if I had to do it over I don't think I would of added that. Otherwise, I think it turned out cute.

This is for my SIL, who is expecting a girl soon! When she asked if I could do this, it gave me the extra incentive I needed to get a new sewing/embroidery machine that I have had my eye on for the longest time. It does just the right amount of embroidery. The bag looks bigger in the picture than it actually is. I love how it turned out and I am planning making one for myself.

Okay, maybe I've just been watching Project Runway again.

This is the first time I used godets. They turned out cute, although if I did it over again I would of started them higher up. Of course, it won't really fit her until next year.

Smocked Dress

I actually did this smocking a long time ago and just now finally got around to constructing the dress. This was the first time I used a pattern for the smocking (from an Australian Smocking and Embroidery magazine). I really like how it resembles lace. I think the dress turned out really nice. It does need to be ironed in the front after sitting around for months in my bag of unfinished smocking projects.

This is a baby-doll top and matching pants that I made for Sadie, hopefully for this Fall. The pants should be fine, but the top is SO big. I might have to put some elastic in the sleeves. I found this blue and brown print a few weeks back. I love the colors, and I noticed in Kohl's back to school catalog they had some dresses in the same colors.

This is the dress that was floating around in my mind since before our trip! I had to get some more elastic thread before I could finish it. The little wiggle worm would not stand so I could get a picture to show off the "puffiness". The top is shirred and actually has pink polka dots that you can't see very well in the picture, and the bottom two tiers sort of blend together in the pictures. I think pink and brown are so cute together.

My friend asked if I could duplicate her breastfeeding cover so she can give them as gifts. The nice thing about this is that the top is made in such a way that you can see your baby and your baby can see you. This outfit is for a curly haired little sweetie in Alabama. Her mom tried to convey her design to me and I hope I was able to come close! This is a really ruffly outfit, more so than the camera can capture. I get to post pictures of her wearing it though, so hopefully those will show it off a little better.
